Scanner Admired For ‘Soft Design Language’

The Siemens Biograph mMR Fully Integrated MR-PET System not only is the first joint MR-PET system brought to the U.S. market and “a remarkable innovation in medical imaging” but also possesses “soft, rounded lines” that “convey a confidence-inspiring impression that may reduce patient anxiety.”

So said the judges of the red dot design awards, bestowed to winners of an annual international design competition run by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. This year’s winners were announced on July 4.

Peter Zec, PhD, founder of the red dot design awards, said in a statement:

Design quality has asserted itself clearly in the judging process, with genuine and new creative solutions also being rewarded. Both of these criteria are not just yardsticks for good design, but also for the potential for success on the market.

As easy as it may be to wax snarky about “soft design language,” these awards really are a big deal in the design world. And design can make a big difference in the functionality and patient-friendliness of potentially intimidating machinery.
