Florida Radiologist Makes An Ice Investment

A hockey-loving Florida radiologist has taken on a slick side project: rescuing a nearly bankrupt ice arena.

Manuel Rose, MD, owns Rose Radiology Centers, with 14 locations in Central Florida, most in or near the Tampa Bay area. In April, he bought the Clearwater Ice Arena in Clearwater. The facility, built in 1985, had become run-down. Last December, 23 children and adults fell ill there, apparently because of high carbon monoxide levels blamed on a faulty dehumidifier.

Dr. Rose installed new management and embarked on a major remodeling. Dave Beaudin, the new director of hockey operations, said:

Thanks to Dr. Rose’s passion for the game of hockey, he connected us and brought us in to help run the operations here.

“He has a vision, and it’s our job to execute that vision,” said Brad Proodian, the new general manager.

Dr. Rose, a native of Massachusetts, is team radiologist for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League. The Rose Radiology Web site carries the designation “Official Radiology Practice of the Tampa Bay Lightning” and includes a video link to a Lightning commercial.

Dr. Rose played college hockey at Tufts University, near Boston, from 1978 through 1982. He still plays and coaches in recreational leagues. He lives in Clearwater with his wife and two sons and has been a member of the Clearwater Ice Arena.

The arena has about 800 members and offers figure skating, ice hockey, and open skating. It now has a new roof, a fitness center, and an expanded pro shop, among other improvements.

An ice arena in Florida isn’t as incongruous as it sounds. The Tampa Bay area is home to lots of transplants and seasonal residents from colder climes. “We have 20 high schools playing hockey locally, but most people don’t even realize it,” Beaudin said.

For those who don’t skate, “our advice is to just try it,” Beaudin said. “We’re the coolest place in town.”
